Education

The purpose of education for individuals, both male and female, is to develop the powers and capacities latent within them, so that they may contribute their share to an ever advancing civilization. Education has long been seen as a key factor in development, linked to economic growth, poverty reduction, improvements in health, and an information revolution. Educational investment may not only result in increasing the educational level of the labor force, but also in greater productivity of physical capital and more efficient management.

The situation of primary education in D.R.C. has seriously deteriorated over the last decades due to several years of war and economic decline.

The gross enrolment rate has decreased from almost 100% in 1978-1979 to 64% in 2005 with a gender gap (72% for boys against 58% for girls) and important regional and geographical disparities. The marginalization of women begins at early childhood as girl children often are suffering from lower education levels.

UNICEF estimated that 23.5 percent of children ages 5 to 14 years in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) were working in 2001. Children work in the informal sector, which constitutes the largest part of the economy.

Conscious of the driving role that education plays in economic growth and the challenge lying ahead for D.R. Congo, Congo Progrès ONGD initiates activities aimed at promoting education as key factor to the development of individuals, communities and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
