Crisis in Grand Kasai - An Emergency Requiring Immediate Action
" More than 3 million of people experience food insecurity in the Kasai region says the World Food Program (WFP). These figures are the results of an extensive study on food security during the month of August in the Kasaï, Kasaï Central, Kasaï Oriental, Lomami et Sankuru provinces."(Radio Okapi, Novembre 2017)
According to Claude Jibidar, director of WFP's operations in DRC, ‘Food security and nutrition ... are deteriorating in many parts of DRC, but nowhere is the situation more alarming than in Kasai.’
The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) brings points out that a food crisis in Grand Kasai, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo could turn into a long term catastrophe because of the lack of humanitarian aid. “We are letting down those who need us most. Without immediate donors support, many – particularly women and children – will die’ has warned Claude Jibidar, WFP representative in DRC.
Humanitarian aid organizations asked for 812 million USD in order to respond to the humanitarian crisis in 2017. It is only 109 USD for every person we want to help. Despite this, the call to help is just 32% financed almost eleven months in the year making of the DR Congo one of the less funded crises in the world… Donors fatigue, geopolitical disinterestedness and the competition with other crises have pushed DR Congo far at the bottom of the list of priorities for the international community (Norwegian Refugee Council, October 2017).
